Sometimes it is hard to think of the Holy Spirit in a personal and practical way, but perhaps this illustration will help. Every professional golfer has a great caddy who comes alongside their golfer and encourages, advises, helps, and defends. However, in order for the golfer to get the most out of his relationship with his caddy and tap into the resources that his caddy can provide, he must trust his caddy completely and respond to his advice. If there is no trust, the caddy will not be able to do his job fully.
In the same way, the Holy Spirit wants more than anything to come alongside each one of us and lead us, encourage us, advise us, defend us, and help us become the people God created us to be. Obviously, the Holy Spirit is God Himself living inside us and has a lot more power and resources than a caddy, but in order for that power and resource to be tapped into, we must fully trust Him with our lives and allow Him to do his job!
